Each October in Ajijic is devoted to the Virgin of the Rosary and on the final day of the month a large fiesta and parade goes through town. As with many things Mexican, the day is a curious mix of uniquely Mexican Catholicism: a carved wooden virgin paraded through town, pre-Hispanic dancers in costume and feathered headdresses, and the constant sonic explosions of fireworks throughout the day. It culminates in the midnight lighting of a giant castillo that sends showers of sparks and fireworks a hundred feet into the air.
